Here has a howto for drupal, it should be similar to other situation. There are some tips to go through this:

You can test the commend from SSH first, and make sure it works
You can make the test as "every minute" plus send yourself the cron job run status so that you can be sure the job runs well
Normally, if the task doesn't work mostly is due to the run enviornment is not set properly, because the cron job will not run as you, so you need to EXPORT proper enviornment variable
